Status of JSNS shutter system; 4-years operation and upcoming improvement

Oikawa, Kenichi; Takada, Hiroshi; Ogawa, Akira; Tanaka, Hiromichi; Maekawa, Fujio

no journal, ,

Japan Spallation Neutron Source provides 23 beam-lines for the neutron experiments in MLF, and each beam-line has an independent primary shutter. Meanwhile, the SNS at U.S. has 24 beam-lines, but they have 12-single channel shutter blocks and 6-multichannel shutter blocks. We realized independent shutter operation for every instrument in JSNS by proper shielding design of the target station and a compact mechanical design of the driving system of the primary shutter. We summarize the status of JSNS shutter system from May 2008 to July 2012 operation, some trouble and their recovery work. In addition, we are facing a Single Event Effect due to the high-energy neutron at the encoder of the servo-moter system. Upcoming improvement in next year will be presented.

Strain measurements in geological material using neutron diffraction

Abe, Jun; Sekine, Kotaro*; Harjo, S.; Gong, W.; Aizawa, Kazuya

no journal, ,

Residual strain measurements in Borehole rock specimen were performed at Engineering Material Diffractometer "TAKUMI" in J-PARC. Lattice parameter of Quartz were varied with measurement gauge position. This indicated that residual tensile strain might be formed at around sample center.

Crossover of 5f character in $$beta$$-US$$_2$$, a Mott insulator with a narrow $$p$$-$$f$$ hybridization gap

Metoki, Naoto; Sakai, Hironori; Suzuki, Michito; Yamamoto, Etsuji; Haga, Yoshinori; Matsuda, Tatsuma; Ikeda, Shugo*

no journal, ,

Our neutron scattering study revealed the crossover of the 5$$f$$ character in $$beta$$-US$$_2$$. This compound is a Mott insulator with a small $$p$$-$$f$$ hybridization gap at $$Gamma$$ point. The hybridization effect with a peculiar band dispersion nearly Dirac fermion would be the origin of the crossover of 5$$f$$ character.

Dynamic and static structure factor for Staphylococcal Nuclease measured by neutron scattering

no journal, ,

The dynamic and static structure factors for Staphylococcal Nuclease (SNase), which is a nucleolytic enzyme derived from Staphylococcus aureus, were evaluated by neutron spin echo (NSE)and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments. The SANS experiment was performed with TAIKAN (BL15) time-of-flight diffractometer at J-PARC/MLF, and we could obtain the static structure factors with wide Q range (0.2 $$<$$ Q[1/$AA] $<$$ 2). The NSE measurement was performed with IN15 spectrometer at ILL. Grenoble, which enabled us to obtain intermediate scattering functions over 200 nanoseconds. The effects of hydration and internal motions were considered.

Effect of pressure on protein low-energy dynamics

Nakagawa, Hiroshi; Jochi, Yasumasa*; Yamamuro, Osamu*; Kataoka, Mikio

no journal, ,

Protein dynamics is closely related with protein biological function. Protein dynamical transition and boson peak is observed by neutron inelastic scattering and molecular dynamics simulation. Protein volume fluctuation is related with cavity in protein structure. The cavity volume is affected by pressure. It is important to examine the effect of pressure on protein dynamics. We examined the effect of pressure on protein dynamical transition and boson peak of Staphylococcal nuclease by neutron inelastic scattering at AGNES spectrometer at JRR-3. We found that boson peak shifted to higher energy upon pressure at 900 MP. And quasi-elastic scattering is restricted by pressure.

Development of a compact laser optics system for an in-situ SEOP $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filter

no journal, ,

We have been developing an ${it in-situ}$ SEOP polarized $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filter to apply it to pulsed neutron experiments. The $$^{3}$$He based neutron polarizer is useful in experiments such as polarized neutron scattering experiments in a wide q-range, inelastic scattering experiment with high energy magnetic and phonon excitation, magnetic field imaging and etc, since it is effective for neutrons in a wide energy range. To introduce the ${it in-situ}$ SEOP polarized $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filter into the instruments of the pulsed neutron facility such as J-PARC, it is important to make the system compact and stable, because the system is located inside thick and bulky radiation shields for high energy $$gamma$$ ray and neutrons. In this study, we have developed a compact laser optics system with a volume holographic grating (VHG) element for the SEOP system. We report the design of our spin filter system and some results of the $$^{3}$$He polarizing experiments in this paper.
